As an eighth grader, I took a “Computers” elective, which entailed typing exercises and unsupervised game-play. One of my favorite games was “The Incredible Machine". Players are given a tray of objects and tools to build mousetrap-like contraptions to accomplish simple tasks. I discovered pinball bumpers and tiny little people and as a morbid teen, realized I could make an enclosure of bumpers, fill it with the people, and when I hit “Go” on my “Incredible Machine”. The poor pawns would bounce around until they were all lying flat. While an underappreciated concept in my teenage mind, the game represented automation of tasks. In business applications, we often reference the word “workflow” when describing different processes. Software automation truly is the incredible machine in database applications.
